Chapter II · of four
The soul of places
Some places are remembered for their beauty; others stay with us because of how they made us feel.
About this chapter
Some places are remembered for their beauty; others stay with us because of how they made us feel. A city, a landscape or a room is never merely a space: it is made of light, silence, traces and the lives that have passed through it.
Photography invites us to pause before these places. To notice how a shadow transforms a façade, how a path disappears into the horizon, or how time gathers on a wall. The photographer does not simply describe what lies before the lens, but searches for what makes each place unique, even when it is difficult to put into words.
To travel is to discover unfamiliar territories, but also to learn how to look anew. Every landscape speaks to us of those who inhabit it, of what happened before we arrived and of what will continue after we have gone.
The photographs in this chapter are not intended to tell us where we are, but to bring us closer to the feeling of having been there. Some places are visited only once, yet remain in our memory forever.
